Cloud Healthcare Platforms
AWS HealthLake Integration
AWS HealthLake is a HIPAA-eligible, FHIR-native data store that lets you ingest, store, transform, and query health data at scale on AWS. It is purpose-built to consolidate clinical data into a standardised FHIR R4 repository and layer analytics and machine learning on top. For teams building healthcare data platforms, population health analytics, or AI features, HealthLake offers a managed foundation that removes much of the undifferentiated heavy lifting of running FHIR infrastructure yourself.
How HealthLake works
HealthLake provides a managed FHIR R4 data store with create, read, update, and search operations over standard FHIR resources. You import data via FHIR APIs or bulk import from Amazon S3, and HealthLake automatically integrates medical NLP to extract meaning from unstructured text and normalise it to standard codes. Once data is in HealthLake, you can query it with FHIR search, export it for analytics in services like Amazon Athena, and visualise it with QuickSight — all within the AWS security and compliance perimeter.
Where HealthLake fits
HealthLake is most valuable as the standardised data layer beneath analytics and AI. Rather than wiring bespoke pipelines for each source, you land data into a FHIR-conformant store and build once on top. It complements EHR integrations: data extracted from Epic, Cerner, or MEDITECH via FHIR can be consolidated in HealthLake for cross-source population health, quality reporting, or model training. It is infrastructure, not an EHR — it does not replace the systems of record, but unifies their data for downstream use.
Compliance on AWS
AWS HealthLake is a HIPAA-eligible service, and AWS will sign a Business Associate Addendum covering eligible services. That does not make your application automatically compliant — you remain responsible for configuring encryption, IAM least-privilege access, network isolation, logging (CloudTrail), and data governance correctly. Designing the account structure, key management, and access controls properly is what turns a HIPAA-eligible service into a genuinely compliant deployment.
How to integrate with AWS HealthLake
- 1
Confirm BAA and account setup
Ensure your AWS account is covered by the AWS Business Associate Addendum and structured for healthcare workloads.
- 2
Create a HealthLake FHIR data store
Provision a HealthLake data store, enabling integrated medical NLP if you need entity extraction from text.
- 3
Ingest data via FHIR or bulk import
Load data using FHIR CRUD APIs or bulk import from S3, mapping each source to FHIR R4 resources.
- 4
Secure the deployment
Configure encryption (KMS), IAM least-privilege roles, network isolation, and CloudTrail logging.
- 5
Build analytics and AI on top
Export to Athena/QuickSight for analytics or feed normalised FHIR data into ML and AI features.
Common use cases
- Consolidating multi-EHR data into one FHIR store for population health analytics
- Normalising and enriching unstructured clinical text with built-in medical NLP
- Powering outcomes dashboards and quality reporting on standardised data
- Providing a compliant data layer for training and serving healthcare AI models
Workflow example
Population health data platform
- Clinical data is extracted from multiple EHRs via FHIR and bulk-loaded into HealthLake from S3.
- HealthLake's medical NLP enriches unstructured notes and normalises codes.
- Data is exported to Amazon Athena for cohort queries and analytics.
- QuickSight dashboards surface population health and outcomes insights to stakeholders.
Frequently asked questions
Is AWS HealthLake HIPAA compliant?
HealthLake is a HIPAA-eligible service and AWS offers a Business Associate Addendum. Compliance of your overall solution still depends on how you configure encryption, access control, logging, and data governance around it.
Does HealthLake replace an EHR?
No. HealthLake is a FHIR data store and analytics foundation, not a system of record. It consolidates data from EHRs and other sources for analytics and AI; clinicians still work in the EHR.
What format does HealthLake use?
HealthLake is FHIR R4 native, storing data as standard FHIR resources. This makes it straightforward to ingest from FHIR-capable EHRs and to build interoperable analytics and AI on top.
